A Chat Above the Clouds: Finding Hope for Our Youth

oday, on my flight to far North Queensland, I sat next to a man who asked me a question that got me thinking. The sun was shining through the window, casting a warm glow on us, as the plane cut through the clouds. We were strangers, but there’s something about being way up in the sky that makes conversations flow more easily.

“I’m here to work with a group that helps young people in trouble with the law,” I told him after he asked about my visit. He raised an eyebrow, a mix of curiosity and skepticism painting his face.

“Why bother?” he replied. “There’s no hope for them.”

His words hung in the air for a moment. But I couldn’t let them stay there. Because if there’s one thing I know deep in my bones, it’s that there is always hope.

I turned to him, looked him in the eyes, and said, “I disagree. These kids, they’ve got dreams. They want to make something of their lives. They want to be somebody. We’ve all made mistakes, but that doesn’t mean we give up on them. It's the opposite, actually.”

The man sat back, listening. And I kept going.

“We owe it to them. They’re still learning, still growing. Every kid, no matter where they come from or what they’ve done, deserves a chance to turn things around.”

I could see the man’s gears turning, considering my words. Outside, the clouds parted, and for a moment, the world below us was clear and bright.

“These kids don’t owe us anything,” I pressed on. “We’re the ones who need to step up. They have hopes, dreams, just like we do. And they want to belong, to be part of something bigger than themselves.”

The plane started its descent then, and the conversation came to a natural pause. We were both quiet, lost in our thoughts. I hoped that maybe, just maybe, I’d planted a seed of hope in his mind. Because every child, every person, has the potential for greatness inside them. And it’s up to us to help light the way.

In those quiet moments above the clouds, I was reminded of the power of belief, hope, and the impact of giving someone a chance. Every child deserves a future where they can shine, and it’s on us to help them find that path. Each one of us can make a difference – one conversation, one act of belief at a time.
